lyrics

I stood among the criers and the silence
Kept my hands to myself
Everyone was pointing and sighing
Picking things up off the shelf

I would have taken a picture from the mantel
The last drops of his cologne
I would have taken a hammer from his garage
I would have taken the smell of his clothes

Sister got the car
Mama got the heartache
His new wife got the house
and the lot
I went to the home
to pay my respects
And all I got was this watch

It was the kind an old man would like to wear
Silver, shiny, it still looked like new
We gave it to him for father's day
In 1982
I tried to wear it everyday at school
But my arm was too small
I realized it didn't matter
I couldn't tell time at all
